Chelsea’s Reece James Shines as England Defeat Croatia 4-2 in World Cup Opener

England got off to the best possible start to their 2026 World Cup Campaign. A 4-2 win over Croatia gave the much needed 3 points and, despite some issues, Tuchel’s side showed the kind of attacking play that could well see them win the tournament.

The end score doesn’t quite tell the full story, with Croatia fighting back twice. It was goals from Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Marcus Rashford that ultimately sealed the win. However, there was also an encouraging performance from Chelsea defender Reece James.

England Found Another Level After Half-Time

The match got off to a great start for England, when Kane managed to convert a retaken penalty. Croatia answered back through Martin Baturina, before Kane restored England’s lead. This was from a powerful header from a Declan Rice corner.

It seemed that England would head into the break with an advantage, but then Petar Musa equalised. It certainly felt that England had thrown away a great lead, with fans, and Tuchel, clearly frustrated.

The second half saw a reenergised England team after what we can only imagine were inspirational words from Tuchel. The team moved the ball quicker, pressed with more intensity, and were constantly creating problems for the Croatian defence. Jude Bellingham restored the lead within 3 minutes, and Rashford added a fourth to make sure in the end stages of the match.

Reece James Delivered at Both Ends of the Pitch

Of course, the goals steal the headlines, but Reece James managed to produce what can only be described as a complete performance. Starting at right-back, he was always providing width and energy, and this meant England had more attacking options when they pushed forward.

His crosses created numerous dangerous moments, and the way that he drove forward meant that he helped to stretch Croatia’s defensive shape. James looked comfortable at all times, and linked well with attacking players down the right flank.

What makes James stand out is his versatility. He can play as a traditional full-back, wing-back, and even move into more central areas when needed. This means that Tuchel has more options to change the team’s shape without the need to use subs.

It can’t be said that James was completely flawless. Some questioned his role in one of Croatia’s goals, with poor positioning. However, these moments were few and far between and shouldn’t overshadow what was a sterling performance overall.

Kane and Bellingham Continue to Lead the Way

England has clear ambitions this time around, and these involve two of the biggest stars. The good news was that both Kane and Bellingham delivered in the opener, giving reassurance for future games.

The two goals from Kane show just why he’s seen as one of the best forwards in the world. Beyond clinical finishing, he linked play well and gave the right sort of leadership when needed. He showed a real ability to drop in deeper, and this allowed his teammates to be brought into play, although scoring is the defining feature of his game.

Bellingham had just as much influence. The Real Madrid star scored England’s third, and he could be seen continually carrying the team forward. He is one of the most complete midfielders in football thanks to his mix of technical quality, athleticism, and confidence.

For followers of football betting, England’s attacking options remain one of their strongest selling points. Few nations can match a group that includes Kane, Bellingham, Rashford, and Bukayo Saka. If they continue creating chances at the rate seen against Croatia, they will be viewed as serious contenders as the tournament progresses.

What the Performance Told Us About England

In reality, openers are never perfect, and that is true here. England certainly showed areas that need improving. The two Croatian goals exposed vulnerabilities in defence and, if these aren’t resolved, they will be exploited by stronger teams later in the tournament.

That being said, there was still plenty to be optimistic about. England responded well to setbacks and controlled the majority of the second half. These are encouraging signs for a side that is looking to go all the way.

For users of WePari, England’s opening performance provided plenty of evidence that they deserve their place among the leading contenders. The result came from sustained attacking pressure, strong midfield play and a squad that appears increasingly comfortable with Tuchel’s approach.

Attention Turns to Ghana

England’s next test comes against Ghana, another side that began the tournament positively. The match should provide a clearer indication of England’s overall level because Ghana will arrive with confidence and a belief that they can challenge one of the competition favourites.

Tuchel will undoubtedly be pleased with the three points, but he will also know that tougher examinations lie ahead.
