Chelsea Make Lucas Bergvall Transfer Decision After Tottenham Exit Request
Chelsea have reportedly decided not to revive their interest in Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall, despite the Sweden international asking to leave Spurs this summer.
The 20-year-old is away with Sweden at the 2026 World Cup, but his club future has already become an early summer subplot. Chelsea explored a move for Bergvall in January before Tottenham refused to engage, and Standard Sport now reports that the Blues do not intend to return for the midfielder even after his transfer request.
That matters because Chelsea’s midfield planning under Xabi Alonso is expected to be one of the defining themes of the window. Bergvall’s age, technical profile and Premier League experience would fit the recruitment model at Stamford Bridge, but the club’s stance suggests the shortlist is moving elsewhere rather than being dragged back toward a player Spurs value at around £45million.
Why Chelsea’s stance matters
For Chelsea, this is as much about discipline as opportunity. Bergvall is a high-upside player, but Tottenham’s price and the politics of a direct London deal make any pursuit complicated before wages or squad fit are even considered.
The decision also protects Chelsea from overcrowding the same midfield lane. Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia already give Alonso senior central options, while the club are still expected to assess further market targets before the window closes.
Unless Tottenham soften their position dramatically, Chelsea’s reported call leaves Bergvall’s next move to other suitors and keeps the Blues focused on priorities they believe are more realistic.
