Chelsea Agree Marco Palestra Deal After Quick Inter Transfer Hijack

Chelsea have reached an agreement in principle for Marco Palestra to join the club from Atalanta.

The deal is expected to be finalised within the next 24 hours, with Chelsea moving quickly to beat Inter Milan to the 21-year-old defender.

According to Ben Jacobs, Chelsea have pulled off a late hijack after agreeing a package in excess of €50million with Atalanta. Inter had been hopeful of landing Palestra, but Chelsea have now taken control of the race.

Xabi Alonso is understood to have played a key role in the deal, with Palestra now finalising terms after choosing Chelsea over Inter.

That is a major shift from earlier in the window.

ReadChelsea had already covered how Chelsea were considering a Marco Palestra move as Inter tried to close the deal. The situation has now moved from interest to agreement.

Why Palestra Fits Chelsea’s Defensive Rebuild

Palestra’s appeal is his versatility.

He is viewed as a two-sided full-back who can play on the right and also cover the left. That matters for Chelsea because Alonso needs defensive balance, not just another body in the squad.

Chelsea’s left-sided picture has already changed after Marc Cucurella’s exit. The club have also needed to protect themselves around Reece James’ fitness and Malo Gusto’s role.

Palestra gives Chelsea another flexible option across the back line.

That is why the move feels more targeted than reactive. He is not just arriving as a young full-back with upside. He fits a tactical need for a manager who will want width, recovery pace and adaptable defenders.

ReadChelsea previously warned that Chelsea needed to move with clarity after Palestra appeared closer to Inter. This is exactly that kind of decisive response.

Chelsea Beat Inter With Speed And Structure

Inter increased their offer, but Chelsea’s package proved stronger.

The Italian club were unable to match Chelsea’s wage proposal, although Palestra’s salary will still fit inside the Blues’ incentive-driven structure. That detail matters because Chelsea have tried to avoid breaking their internal wage model for young players.

Palestra was also offered to Arsenal and Liverpool as a move to England was explored this summer. Chelsea have now moved fastest when the opportunity opened.

The fee is significant, but the profile explains the urgency.

A 21-year-old, Premier League-ready full-back would already carry value. A 21-year-old who can play both sides gives Chelsea more tactical freedom and recruitment cover in one deal.

ReadChelsea has already looked at how Xabi Alonso’s six-player Chelsea rebuild could reshape the squad. Palestra now looks like one of the first clear examples of the new manager’s influence.

Chelsea still need the final details completed, but the direction is clear.

Alonso wanted versatility. Chelsea moved quickly. Inter were caught.

If final terms are completed as expected, Palestra will become a major early marker in the new Stamford Bridge rebuild.
