Reece James Says England Support Can Be World Cup Difference Before Ghana Clash

Reece James has said England’s travelling support can become a genuine World Cup factor as the Three Lions prepare to face Ghana in Boston tonight.

The Chelsea captain is part of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad at the expanded 2026 tournament, where the schedule across the United States, Canada and Mexico has placed extra demands on players and supporters alike. James started England’s opening Group L win over Croatia and now has another immediate test as England look to strengthen their position.

His message matters for Chelsea because James is not just another international away from Cobham. He is the club captain, a senior voice in the England camp and one of the players Xabi Alonso will inherit when Chelsea’s new head coach begins work in July.

James points to the value of England’s 12th man

Speaking in an official Chelsea interview before England’s meeting with Ghana, James stressed that players are aware of the sacrifices supporters make to follow the team across a tournament of this scale.

The defender said the support can act as a “12th man” in difficult matches, according to Chelsea’s official website. That is a notable line from a player who has had to balance Chelsea responsibility with England expectation throughout a demanding summer.

For Chelsea fans, the key detail is James’ mindset. He is talking like a leader, playing meaningful World Cup minutes and preparing for Ghana with the kind of focus Alonso will want to see when club football returns.
