Reece James Confirms Early Xabi Alonso Talks Before Chelsea Reset

Reece James has confirmed he has already spoken with incoming Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso before the Spaniard starts work at Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea captain is away on England duty, but his comments are an early signal that Alonso’s reset is already reaching senior figures in the dressing room.

James said he has spoken with Alonso by phone and is excited about the appointment, according to Chelsea’s official update on his Xabi Alonso conversations. Alonso is due to begin the role on 1 July after signing a four-year contract.

James Message Gives Chelsea A Leadership Starting Point

Chelsea’s next phase needs more than recruitment. Alonso will inherit a squad full of high-end talent, but the immediate challenge is turning that talent into a coherent team with a clear hierarchy.

That is why James matters. If the captain buys into the new manager early, it gives Alonso a natural bridge into the group before pre-season starts in full.

The phone calls do not solve Chelsea’s tactical or transfer questions. They do show that the reset has begun before the first training session, and James sounds ready to be central to it. For a squad that has changed repeatedly, early communication between captain and coach is a useful starting point before Alonso’s ideas hit the grass.
