Chelsea Open Rayo Vallecano Talks For Pep Chavarría

Chelsea are in club-to-club talks with Rayo Vallecano over a deal for left-back Pep Chavarría.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that initial contact has been made, with the player keen on a move to Stamford Bridge. Matteo Moretto had also reported Chelsea’s interest in the 28-year-old Spanish defender.

That matters because Chelsea’s left-back situation has become one of the sharper early squad calls of Xabi Alonso’s rebuild. Read Chelsea has already looked at why Chavarría represents a practical post-Marc Cucurella option, and direct talks now move that debate into a more serious phase.

Alonso Gets A Practical Left-Back Option

Chavarría is not the most glamorous name Chelsea could chase, but that may be part of the logic. After a summer built around defensive reshaping, Alonso needs reliability as much as upside.

The Spaniard offers La Liga experience, senior maturity and a specialist left-sided profile. The Sun reports that Rayo Vallecano have Chavarría under contract until 2030, with a release clause included in the deal.

For Chelsea, the attraction is clear. Alonso needs a left-back who can support build-up, defend space and give the squad another natural option after the Cucurella reset.

That wider defensive rebuild is already moving across several lanes. Read Chelsea’s Maxence Lacroix analysis showed how the club are also seeking pace and physical coverage at centre-back.

Chavarría would be a different kind of signing: less headline-heavy, more functional. But in a squad that has often looked overloaded in some areas and short of clarity in others, that may be exactly the point.

If Chelsea push from talks to agreement, this would give Alonso one fewer defensive problem before pre-season begins.
