Tyrique George Everton Transfer Talks Put Chelsea Academy Sale In Focus

Share

Chelsea are edging towards another important academy sale as Everton continue talks over a permanent deal for Tyrique George.

The 20-year-old winger spent the second half of last season on loan at Everton, who declined to trigger the £25m option attached to that agreement.

The Guardian reported that Everton are still negotiating a structured deal for George, with a lower guaranteed fee and add-ons that could move the package closer to the original option price.

For Chelsea, this is not just another young forward leaving.

It is an early test of how Xabi Alonso’s first squad rebuild balances Cobham sentiment, attacking depth and the pure-profit value of academy sales.

Why George’s Everton Move Makes Sense

George’s route at Chelsea has narrowed quickly.

The winger has promise, but Alonso already has a crowded attacking group before pre-season. Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao, Joao Pedro and Liam Delap all need minutes across the front line and attacking midfield zones.

Chelsea have also added younger forwards to the wider succession plan, with Geovany Quenda and Dastan Satpaev part of the next wave.

That makes George’s position difficult.

Keeping him would preserve a homegrown player with upside. Selling him would suggest Alonso wants a cleaner senior rotation from the start.

Read Chelsea has already covered why George’s Everton move gives Chelsea a clear Xabi Alonso sale decision. The latest talks now put the structure of that deal under the microscope.

Chelsea Need The Right Fee Structure

The key detail is not just the headline price.

Everton are not simply matching the original £25m option. They are trying to agree a package with less money guaranteed up front and add-ons that could take the total closer to that figure.

That creates a familiar Chelsea call.

A strong headline fee helps the optics of selling a Cobham forward. A stronger upfront payment helps the club more immediately in accounting terms, especially after UEFA’s latest squad-cost ruling.

Read Chelsea has also looked at how UEFA’s fine over the squad cost rule sharpened the pressure around Alonso’s transfer plans.

That is why the add-ons matter.

If Chelsea accept a lower guaranteed figure, the bonuses need to be realistic rather than decorative. Everton know the player, and David Moyes clearly sees enough in George to keep pushing after the option deadline passed.

There is a sporting case for doing the deal now. George would get a permanent home at a Premier League club, while Chelsea would avoid another season of limited minutes damaging his value.

The sale would still sting for supporters who value the Cobham pathway. But academy development also depends on timing exits properly when the first-team route has narrowed.

If Everton reach the right number, Chelsea should be prepared to move.

The harder part is making sure the deal shows control, not just a need to clear space.
