Reece James And Trevoh Chalobah Unused As England Beat Mexico

Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah were unused substitutes as England reached the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals with a dramatic 3-2 win over Mexico.

Thomas Tuchel’s side survived a chaotic last-16 tie at the Azteca Stadium, with England’s match centre confirming kick-off was delayed by an hour because of weather conditions.

Jude Bellingham scored twice before half-time to put England 2-0 up, only for Julian Quinones to pull one back for Mexico before the interval. Jarell Quansah was then sent off early in the second half, leaving England to play the final stages with 10 men.

Harry Kane restored the two-goal lead from the penalty spot, but Raul Jimenez converted a Mexico penalty to set up a tense finish. Sky Sports described it as a heroic defensive display as England held on through more than 11 minutes of stoppage time.

Chelsea Pair Stay In Reserve

For Chelsea, the important detail is that both James and Chalobah remained on the bench.

Reuters reported that England’s 10 men survived heavy Mexico pressure to reach the quarter-finals, where they will face Norway after their 2-1 win over Brazil.

James’ unused role continues to protect his workload after his earlier hamstring issue in the tournament. Chalobah, meanwhile, remains part of Tuchel’s squad picture without adding minutes to a physically demanding summer.

ReadChelsea has already covered how James and Chalobah advanced with England after the DR Congo win. The Mexico victory now pushes both Chelsea defenders one step deeper into the tournament.

England’s quarter-final against Norway in Miami will bring another selection decision for Tuchel. For Chelsea, the balance remains clear: tournament exposure is useful, but James and Chalobah avoiding extra minutes in a bruising Azteca win may prove just as valuable.
