Tuchel delivers glowing Reece James verdict after Chelsea injury scare

Thomas Tuchel described Reece James as “excellent” after the Chelsea captain returned from injury during England’s World Cup quarter-final victory over Norway.

James entered the game in the 71st minute as England secured a dramatic 2-1 win after extra time in Miami.

The 26-year-old initially operated in central midfield alongside Elliot Anderson. He later moved to right-back as Tuchel changed England’s shape.

James looked more comfortable in his natural position and helped contain Norway winger Antonio Nusa during the closing stages.

“Reece James was excellent,” Tuchel said after the match, while also praising Morgan Rogers, Eberechi Eze and Djed Spence for their contributions from the bench.

The England head coach admitted his side were fortunate to progress and demanded an improved display in the semi-final.

James gives Chelsea major fitness lift

Tuchel’s verdict will encourage Xabi Alonso after James missed England’s previous three matches with a hamstring problem.

ReadChelsea reported how James completed almost 50 minutes across two positions without suffering an obvious setback against Norway.

His ability to play in midfield could also interest Alonso. The new Chelsea manager has previously used full-backs in central areas and will value James’ intelligence in possession.

However, the priority remains keeping the captain fit.

James has endured repeated injury problems over recent seasons, and Chelsea will need to manage his workload carefully when he returns from the World Cup.

The post-match reaction to England’s victory confirmed Tuchel was impressed by James despite criticising the overall performance.

England now face Argentina in Wednesday’s semi-final. James has strengthened his case to start after making a successful return and earning public praise from his manager.
