John Stones already holds a strong relationship with Cole Palmer as Chelsea consider adding the experienced defender to Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Chelsea have placed the England international on their centre-back shortlist following the end of his Manchester City contract. Stones is available without a transfer fee after leaving the Etihad Stadium following 10 successful seasons.

Stones’ previous comments about Palmer provide another interesting element to the possible move.

Stones described himself as a “huge fan” of Palmer after watching the attacker establish himself with Manchester City’s senior team.
“I was a huge fan of Cole as soon as he came into our first-team set-up,” Stones said in October 2024.
He also praised Palmer for playing with the freedom of someone enjoying football in the park. Stones explained that he had made the younger player aware of his disappointment when he left City.
The defender offered similar praise before facing Chelsea in February 2024. In an official Manchester City interview, Stones said he had been close with Palmer and was pleased with his success at Stamford Bridge.
That relationship would help Stones settle quickly if Chelsea advance their interest. Palmer is now central to Alonso’s attacking plans, even after Morgan Rogers’ British-record arrival.

Stones would bring leadership and experience to one of the Premier League’s youngest squads.
The 32-year-old made almost 300 appearances for City and won 20 major trophies during his decade at the club. City described him as one of the defining players of their most successful era when confirming his departure.
His ability in possession would also suit Alonso. Stones can step into midfield during build-up play, operate in a back three and cover several defensive positions.
However, Chelsea would need to assess his recent injury record and salary expectations. A free transfer does not remove the financial risk if Stones requires a significant contract.
The club must also create room within the defensive group. Levi Colwill, Josh Acheampong, Jorrel Hato and Tosin Adarabioyo are among the current senior options, while several other defenders could leave before the window closes.
Lacroix talks could shape Chelsea decision
Maxence Lacroix remains Chelsea’s main defensive target.

Signing both players would give Alonso considerable depth, but it could also create an overcrowded centre-back group. Chelsea may therefore view Stones as an alternative if talks with Palace become too expensive.
The former City defender offers qualities Chelsea currently lack. His experience, composure and understanding with Palmer could all prove valuable.
However, Stones remains one of several names under consideration. Chelsea’s progress with Lacroix and their ability to move defenders out will influence whether their interest develops into a formal offer.
