Chelsea’s £117million signing of Morgan Rogers has strengthened a clear recruitment trend at Stamford Bridge. The Blues now have a growing group of former Manchester City academy players inside Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Rogers joins Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Tosin Adarabioyo in west London. Chelsea have committed close to £300million to those players since Palmer arrived in 2023.
The pattern is too consistent to dismiss as coincidence. Chelsea believe Manchester City academy graduates offer technical quality, Premier League experience and the potential to improve further.
BBC Sport has examined why Chelsea continue to recruit players developed at City. The strategy reflects the profile targeted by sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley rather than the preferences of one head coach.
Manchester City academy graduates fit Chelsea’s profile
City’s academy prepares young players to receive possession under pressure and understand demanding positional structures. Those qualities suit a Chelsea squad expected to control games and build attacks from deep.
However, the Blues are not simply signing prospects directly from City’s youth teams. Rogers developed at Aston Villa after spells with Middlesbrough, while Delap established himself at Ipswich Town before moving to Stamford Bridge.
Lavia arrived after proving himself at Southampton. Gittens developed further in Germany, while Tosin gained extensive Premier League experience with Fulham.
Chelsea are therefore buying players who combine City’s technical education with senior experience elsewhere. That reduces some of the uncertainty usually attached to signing young talent.
Their age also fits the ownership’s broader model. Most can contribute immediately while retaining significant value over the length of their contracts.
Palmer and Rogers provide the clearest blueprint
Palmer remains the outstanding example. Chelsea identified an elite talent who lacked a guaranteed starting role at City and gave him the responsibility he wanted.
His success encouraged the club to continue exploring a familiar market. However, not every former City player should be judged against Palmer’s exceptional output.
Rogers arrives with far more senior experience than Palmer had in 2023. He produced consistently for Aston Villa and England before completing a British-record move to Chelsea.
Chelsea confirmed that Rogers has signed until 2033. His existing relationship with Palmer should also help him settle, although Alonso’s tactical plan was central to his decision.
The latest Morgan Rogers interview revealed Palmer’s role in welcoming him to Chelsea. The two attackers previously played together in City’s youth system and have remained close friends.
Alonso can now use Rogers from the left while keeping Palmer in central areas. ReadChelsea has examined three possible systems featuring the pair.
Chelsea must balance outside recruitment with Cobham
The strategy also creates an uncomfortable question. Chelsea possess one of England’s leading academies, yet the first-team squad increasingly contains more former City prospects than Cobham graduates.
Reece James and Levi Colwill remain central figures. Josh Acheampong has also established himself around the senior group, but several other academy players have been sold or loaned.
Signing proven talent from City is not automatically a criticism of Cobham. Chelsea are recruiting players at different stages of development and filling specific first-team roles.
Even so, the club must continue creating genuine opportunities for its own prospects. Spending heavily on players developed elsewhere will attract scrutiny whenever a Chelsea graduate leaves without receiving the same chance.
Palmer has already made the strategy look inspired. Rogers now carries the pressure of proving that Chelsea have identified a repeatable recruitment advantage rather than simply following one exceptional success.
