Chelsea defender Maxence Lacroix could regain his France starting place against Belgium after Dayot Upamecano’s suspension cut short his international camp.
Le Parisien reports that France released Upamecano to return to Bayern Munich following his dismissal in Friday’s 1-1 draw with Italy.
Zinedine Zidane must now change his defence for Monday’s Nations League meeting at the Stade de France.
Maxence Lacroix enters France selection picture
Lacroix came off the bench in the 87th minute against Italy, replacing Lucas Da Cunha after Upamecano received his second yellow card.
The French Football Federation’s match report confirms the substitution and Upamecano’s suspension for the Belgium fixture.
Jeremy Jacquet and Leny Yoro remain alternative centre-back options, so Lacroix’s involvement in the closing stages does not guarantee promotion to the starting XI.
However, the enforced change gives the Chelsea defender a clear opportunity to earn another start before returning to club duties.
Belgium also face enforced changes
France lead their Nations League group with seven points, one ahead of Belgium, making Monday’s meeting significant at the top of the table.
The visitors have selection problems of their own. Kevin De Bruyne and Youri Tielemans are suspended, creating a potential opening for Chelsea team-mate Romeo Lavia in Belgium’s midfield.
Both Chelsea players could therefore benefit from enforced changes, although neither starting place is confirmed.
