According to Squawka, Chelsea’s former manager Carlo Ancelotti has compared Chelsea’s poor run of form to the “Mystery of Istanbul” in 2005.
This, of course, references the Champions League Final, where AC Milan were leading 3-0 at halftime. However, against all odds their opponent Liverpool fought back to even the score, eventually winning the match on penalties.
Ancelotti told Squawka:
Sometimes you can’t explain why things happen – what is going wrong. It is a mystery. How did we lose (with AC Milan) in Istanbul when we were three goals up against Liverpool at half-time?
This is an interesting point on the matter. While everyone in the footballing world is currently trying to solve Chelsea’s current nightmare, Ancelotti has suggested that essentially sometimes unexplainable things happen. While at first it seems a lazy analytical opinion, it definitely would offer relief to someone like Jose Mourinho. Either way, Chelsea will be hopeful that they can turn around whatever the problem may be.
The Italian manager is currently on sabbatical though he’s been linked with the Stamford Bridge hot seat, should Mourinho be relieved of his duties. While he wouldn’t be my preferred choice to manage the Blues in the wake of a Mourinho firing, one cannot argue with his success. He has won the Champions League with Milan twice, and Real Madrid once. Furthermore, he has won countless league titles across several countries.
There is no arguing with his pedigree, yet I doubt he will be appointed as the manager. However, his comments regarding Chelsea’s season are interesting.
