Chelsea target Icardi wanted by Bayern Munich

Chelsea were strongly linked with a move for Inter Milan captain Mauro Icardi last summer and are believed to have retained their interest in the former Barcelona academy star, but the Blues face some intense competition for his signature.

Along with the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid, Bayern Munich have now joined the race to sign the Argentina international in the summer as they look to take advantage of his release clause.

The 24-year-old, who has 18 goals in 22 Serie A appearances so far this season, has a release clause of €110m written into his contract, which in today’s world of football is not the astronomical fee it would’ve been seen as just 12 months ago.

Bayern Munich are understood to be willing to allow Robert Lewandowski to move on in the summer with Real Madrid interested in signing him and Icardi appears to be their preferred replacement for the former Borussia Dortmund star.

PSG are also interested in Icardi as a replacement for Edinson Cavani who is wanted by Roma. The Ligue 1 club have also been linked with a swoop for Alvaro Morata and should Chelsea let him leave they could make a strong push for Icardi but would need to see off interest from Bayern, Manchester United and Real Madrid for his signature.
