Sarri insists that he will not play with five defenders at Chelsea

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has been explaining why he will not under any circumstances revert to a system that entails five defenders.

The Blues boss has developed a reputation in recent years for his attractive style of play and has vowed to follow suit at Stamford Bridge, with a 4-3-3 shape likely to be the prominent tactical choice for the Italian.

Previously, Chelsea set up with a five-back formation under the management of Antonio Conte, initially bringing plenty of success for the club.

However, Sarri has insisted that he will stay true to his tactical principles and has been explaining why he will continue to use a back four. As quoted by West London Sport, the Italian spoke of his reluctance to use five defenders.

I am not able to play with five defenders. Why? Because we are trying to defend by looking only at the ball. In this way if I defend with five defenders I lose immediately metres on the pitch. So I am not able to do it. I tried five years ago but it’s not my way.

Sarri has so far enjoyed his time at Chelsea. He has seen his side secure two wins from two after comprehensive victories against Huddersfield and Arsenal.

Next up for the Blues is a trip to St James’ Park, where they will look to defeat Newcastle on their own turf for the first time since 2011.
