Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero looks set to land himself as new contract with the club – so long as they can fulfil their home-grown quota.
The 37-year old, who joined the Blues in the summer of 2017 after having been released at the end of his contract with Manchester City, drew praise last weekend for the way in which he coped with the controversy in the Carabao Cup Final.
Chelsea first-choice Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to leave the pitch in extra time during the game between Chelsea and Man City, despite manager Maurizio Sarri wanting to bring Caballero on before the impending penalty shootout.
Kepa inspired widespread criticism for his actions, while Caballero earned praise for the professionalism he displayed during that moment.
As reported by Telegraph Sport, Chelsea had already hoped they could convince Caballero to sign a 12-month extension on his current deal that is due to expire in the summer, but after the Kepa incident, they have become even more convinced that his professionalism and experience are valuable attributes to have at the club.
However, any decision over his future will depend on whether Chelsea can maintain their homegrown quota, with Gary Cahill, Danny Drinkwater and Victor Moses all expected to leave in the summer, while Rob Green’s contract is also set to expire.
Chelsea typically use a goalkeeping spot to boost their quota, which would mean either Rob Green would need to be kept at Stamford Bridge, or a new goalkeeper would need to be brought in to compete with Kepa – meaning Caballero’s future could be up in the air.
