Chelsea explored Sander Berge deadline day swoop

Reports have emerged suggesting Chelsea made a late ploy to bring Sander Berge to the club on deadline day.

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang was brought in before the transfer window shut last Thursday but with a Ngolo Kante-sized hole in the engine room, Thomas Tuchel saw fit to bring in another midfielder before the 11pm deadline.

Denis Zakaria was the name that ultimately landed at Stamford Bridge on loan for the season but claims have now surfaced claiming that Sheffield United metronome Berge was a potential option.

The Star say that the Blues were among a number of Premier League clubs who expressed an interest in bringing the Norwegian ace in on loan.

Although no bid was offered, representatives of the west London side are thought to have enquired about the midfielder’s ‘availability’.

The Blades brought Berge to south Yorkshire in 2019 in a club-record £22m deal just months after a meeting between his former club Genk and Liverpool which led Reds boos Jurgen Klopp taking the player aside (VG via Daily Express) and praising him for his performance as well as labelling him an “interesting player”.

Norway national team coach Stale Solbakken recently stated that the 30-capped international doesn’t belong in the Championship and it does feel like he will move on to bigger and better things however, whether he ends up at Cobham now remains to be seen.

With Kante and Jorginho’s contracts both expiring next summer, it could prompt Todd Boehly into revisiting talks over the 24-year-old.
