Liam Rosenior’s tenure at Chelsea was a complete disappointment. The club are currently on a five-match losing streak in the Premier League following their 3-0 loss to Brighton. As a result, they have slipped down to seventh position. With this, they have realistically thrown away any chances of qualifying for the Champions League.
Keeping this in mind, reports had already emerged suggesting that the Chelsea boss was on the verge of being shown the door. That has now been made official by the club.
The World Champions will need someone who can steady the Blues ship and weather this storm for now. Here are three who should be worth considering.
Calum McFarlane
Calum McFarlane is the one who has been handed the interim manager post for now. The Englishman has been the assistant manager at Chelsea. He previously served as caretaker for two matches when Enzo Maresca was sacked back in January.
McFarlane has been involved in managerial roles at various levels at Chelsea. He has gained valuable insights about the club and knows how things operate here. With quite a few games still left in this season, he could be a very good option to steady the ship.
It is worth mentioning that McFarlane made headlines when Chelsea secured a 1-1 draw against Manchester City under his charge. But at the same time, he has been here all this while as the Blues have sunk to historic lows.
Perhaps it might not be a bad idea to consider bringing in another else, most likely alongside McFarlane. Someone who would immediately command the respect of the entire squad.
John Terry
The Blues legend has been part of the Chelsea academy staff since 2023. Needless to say, he knows his way around the club. In fact, he captained the side during their most successful period, winning multiple trophies, including the Champions League.
Terry might be the leadership figure who could bring a major change in the players’ mentality. The Blues squad is filled with talented youngsters. They just need someone to guide them through this difficult patch.
Chelsea fans would be thrilled to see a familiar face back in the dugout, although in a different role this time. He will never get the manager’s job in the long run. But this short period of time might allow him to make the players understand what the standards are at this football club and what it takes to succeed here. It remains to be seen if the board will indeed bring in Terry or opt for a more experienced option.
Claude Makelele
Another Chelsea legend makes this list. The former defensive midfielder is currently without a club after leaving Asteras Aktor in 2024.
He has previously been involved in technical roles at Chelsea, including serving as loan player manager and under-18 individual coach from 2019 to 2023.
Makelele also served as an assistant manager for Paris Saint-Germain from 2011 to 2014, giving him valuable experience. He would also be a well-deserving candidate to replace Rosenior for a short run. Like Terry, he would immediately command the respect of the entire squad.
