Gabriel Slonina is training with Strasbourg as Chelsea explore another possible loan move for the United States goalkeeper.
A transfer has not been agreed and the 22-year-old’s presence in France does not guarantee that he will join the Ligue 1 club.
However, Nizaar Kinsella reports that Strasbourg are considering Slonina as they search for a goalkeeper following Mike Penders’ return to Chelsea.
Penders spent last season on loan with Strasbourg but has now returned to his parent club, creating an obvious vacancy within BlueCo’s French operation.
Strasbourg could offer Slonina regular football
Slonina needs another season of consistent senior minutes after several disrupted loan spells since joining Chelsea from Chicago Fire.
The American made 34 appearances for Eupen during the 2023/24 campaign before joining Barnsley on loan. Chelsea recalled him from Oakwell in January 2025 after 14 appearances across all competitions.
He remains part of a crowded goalkeeping group at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s squad currently includes Robert Sánchez, Filip Jørgensen, Teddy Sharman-Lowe, Penders and Slonina. ReadChelsea recently reported that the club have also contacted experienced goalkeepers about a possible third-choice role.
A move to Strasbourg could therefore give Slonina a clearer route to first-team football while allowing Chelsea to monitor his development closely.
The arrangement would also represent a direct continuation of Penders’ pathway, although Strasbourg will assess Slonina on his own merits rather than simply replacing one Chelsea loanee with another.
Chelsea signed Slonina on a six-year contract in 2022, leaving him tied to the club until 2028.
Training with Strasbourg gives both clubs an opportunity to assess the fit. A formal move will depend on whether the French side believe Slonina is ready to become their first-choice goalkeeper.
