According to reports, Chelsea are expected to target the centre of midfield when it comes to their January transfer business.
An article published by the Evening Standard surfaced over the weekend that suggested that the Blues aim to support the newly-appointed Graham Potter following the World Cup with a new midfielder and ‘possibly’ a new backup goalkeeper as the main objectives.
Todd Boehly made a statement in his first transfer window as the new co-owner as the club splurged a record £271.1m on eight new signings.
One of which included Juventus enforcer Denis Zakaria on deadline day but with both Jorginho and Ngolo Kante having their contracts expire at the end of the season, ‘there is a need to sign midfielders.’
The Standard have speculated that the west Londoners could revisit a deal for Edson Alvarez having seen a £43m bid turned down for the 24-year-old Ajax midfielder late in the window this summer.
It suggests that PSV’s Ibrahim Sangare (Eindhovens Dagblad via Metro) and Romeo Lavia, who were both the subjects of last-minute advances, could also be targeted with it clear that the centre of the pitch is their most urgent need while a new no.2 could be drafted in with Kepa’s future up in arms.
It will be interesting to see who Potter deploys in that department in the coming weeks considering how Thomas Tuchel seemingly struggled towards the end of his tenure, putting together five different pairings in the first seven games of the season following an injury to Kante, but it does seem as if a fresh face will come in to reinvigorate that engine room come January.
