Romelu Lukaku may receive a ‘third chance’ to prove himself at Stamford Bridge following the recent change in the Chelsea dugout.
That’s according to journalist Dean Jones, who was discussing Lukaku’s future following the appointment of Graham Potter at Stamford Bridge.
Lukaku only rejoined the Blues last year in a club-record £97.5m move, but still with four years left on his £350k-per-week contract, he was sent back to Inter Milan on a season-long loan.
The 29-year-old only managed eight goals in 26 Premier League appearances last term and voiced his frustration in an Italian interview (via Sky Sports), saying he was ‘not happy’ with the amount of game time he was being handed by former manager Thomas Tuchel.
The Belgian frontman scored on his return to action for the Nerazzurri but has sat out injured since.
Now Jones has speculated that Lukaku could well play in a Chelsea shirt once his loan spell ends, but did stress that he isn’t looking too far down the line.
He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think Lukaku is an intriguing storyline now. Can you imagine if he gets a third chance to crack it at Chelsea and he actually nails it? It’s kind of one you want to see.
“But we’ll have to see whether that can actually become a reality because, right now, he’s just focusing on getting fit at Inter and he’s just got to take one step at a time to get back to being the player that he was.”
While Lukaku has never been able to show his true self at the Blues, his quality is undeniable.
He has scored 121 goals and provided 43 assists in 278 Premier League appearances but only nine of which came in a Chelsea shirt last season.
In eight campaigns as a regular performer in the top flight, it was the first time he failed to reach double figures for goals and in five of those seasons, he scored 15 times or more.
However, it remains to be seen whether or not Lukaku will be handed another opportunity at the Bridge in what will be 12 years since he first arrived in west London when next summer rolls around.
