Chelsea are set to travel to the French capital to take on Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League this week. The two teams have some past history in the competition, and have been drawn to face each other again.
Chelsea have not managed to beat PSG in any of their previous four meetings in the Champions League. The last time they got the better of the French giants in Europe, it was at home through that iconic Demba Ba winner, followed by Jose Mourinho’s run down the touchline.
The two teams did meet recently in the Club World Cup final. Chelsea were the heavy underdogs going into the game. But they won 3-0, thanks to a Cole Palmer brace and a brilliant chipped finish from Joao Pedro.
It is not just on the pitch that two teams could be competing though. It looks like PSG have one of Chelsea’s most important players in their sights and have been in contact over a move.
PSG reportedly in contact with Chelsea player and his representatives
According to L’Equipe (via Metro), PSG are in contact with both Enzo Fernandez and his representatives to discuss a deal.
Fernandez is someone who has been constantly linked with a move away from Chelsea over his time at Stamford Bridge. That has never really materialised though.
This season, he might be playing his best football since joining Chelsea. There was some speculation that he was not happy with the club’s decision to sack Enzo Maresca. But the Argentine’s form has not suffered since the appointment of Liam Rosenior. If anything, his reputation as one of the Blues’ most important players has only grown.
Could Enzo Fernandez leave Chelsea next summer?
Things can change very quickly in football though. Especially when you consider the shaky situation of Chelsea.
Pretty much every season since the change of ownership, they have found themselves in a situation where their qualification to the next season’s Champions League is uncertain. Under Mauricio Pochettino, they failed to get over the finish line and ended up in sixth place. With Maresca, they did qualify for Europe’s elite competition with a fourth-placed finish.
Where will they finish under Rosenior this season? That could very well determine the future of someone like Fernandez, who might not be keen to hang around, if the club don’t qualify for the Champions League. He has been here since 2023, and to be honest, there has not been much in the name of progress.
