After a decent outing against Aston Villa, it had looked like Filip Jorgensen had moved ahead of Robert Sanchez in the Chelsea pecking order. That belief was further underlined after he started against PSG in the Champions League. But it did not take long for things to go downhill.
Chelsea were in the game for the most part and it was tied 2-2 until the 74th minute. But an error from Jorgensen allowed the home side to regain their lead. After that, they scored twice more. The tie could already be beyond Liam Rosenior’s side.
Jorgensen played a key part in allowing that with his shaky display in goal. To make matters worse, he seemed to ignore Reece James’ calls for him to acknowledge the travelling fans after the game.
Chelsea fans are clearly not unhappy with Jorgensen’s performance. To be fair to him, he did make some decent saves on the night as well. But goalkeepers are always remembered for their mistakes. Sanchez’ error-prone nature is the only reason he is not a nailed-on starter anymore.
What Jorgensen did in the Chelsea dressing room after his errors against PSG
Rosenior has shed some light on what Jorgensen did after his horror night in Paris. According to The Chelsea Chronicle, the manager said: “Credit to him, held his hands up in the dressing room. Everyone makes mistakes; sometimes they’re more costly than others. This is one of those.”
Of course, it is good to see Jorgensen acknowledge his mistakes. That being said, it does not solve Chelsea’s problems at the moment.
Who will be Chelsea’s number one moving forward
Chelsea have never been able to solve their issue between the posts since Thibaut Courtois left for Real Madrid. They have had quite a few goalkeepers since then. Results have been mixed at best.
Kepa Arrizabalaga was signed for a world-record transfer fee for a goalkeeper from Athletic Bilbao. But he was never able to convince as the Blues’ number one and now finds himself as the backup goalie for Arsenal.
Edouard Mendy was phenomenal during their Champions League-winning campaign. But he would end up losing his form soon afterwards and left for the Saudi Pro League.
Sanchez has had his moments in a Chelsea shirt. But the errors in his game cannot be ignored. On his day, he is world-class. But the Spaniard is just as likely to produce a terrible performance.
Jorgensen is not exactly the solution though. He has always struggled against physical oppositions and yesterday showed that he is not exactly brilliant playing out from the back either. Do not be surprised if Sanchez is back as number one after this.
