Joao Pedro has been in top form since Liam Rosenior became manager of Chelsea. But the game against PSG showed that the Blues do need another quality option up front. Liam Delap does not look good enough to deliver at the top level. Nicolas Jackson’s future at Stamford Bridge is uncertain. And although Emmanuel Emegha is set to arrive next summer, he would be another project signing.
Chelsea fans want to see the club win now, after four years of little success under BlueCo. For that to happen, they will need a lot more proven quality and experience than they have in the squad right now.
Julian Alvarez is someone Chelsea have been linked with on-and-off for a while now. But where do we stand with regards to the Argentine?
Alvarez reminded everybody what he is capable of this week with a brace against Tottenham Hotspur. Is that a sign of things to come in the future?
Chelsea and Arsenal in talks over Alvarez but he prefers Barcelona
According to TEAMtalk, Alvarez’s camp have made it known to clubs that he is prepared to leave Atletico Madrid in the summer. He is said to be open to the idea of a return to England. London would be his preferred destination, which explains the early talks held with Arsenal and Chelsea.
But the report further adds that throughout discussions, Arsenal and Chelsea have been kept fully informed that Alvarez’s preferred option would be Barcelona. However, the finances are a hurdle when it comes to Barca and the Argentine will not allow the situation to drag on indefinitely.
Why Alvarez could be a brilliant signing for Chelsea
For years, we have talked about the need for Chelsea to sign some proven quality. Alvarez fits that requirement perfectly, at least in my eyes.
Alvarez did an excellent job at Manchester City with the options he was given, even though it was quite clear that he was a backup option to Erling Haaland. If you ask me, they have not been the same since he left.
He has also done a good enough job at Atletico Madrid, without being excellent. And for Argentina, he was an integral part of winning the World Cup in 2022.
