In a tight race to finish in the Champions League qualifying spots, Chelsea have won just one of their last five Premier League games. In Europe’s elite competition, they were handed a 5-2 defeat by PSG in mid-week, pretty much ending the tie in the first leg itself. And in the FA Cup, they needed extra-time to get past a 10-man Wrexham team.
Naturally, questions are already being asked about Liam Rosenior. It was in January that he was brought in to replace Enzo Maresca. He has only been in the job for two months.
Time comes at a premium if you are a Chelsea manager though. And with the Blues looking completely out of form, the fans are starting to lose patience already.
If you ask me, Chelsea are going to back Rosenior beyond this season, even if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. Sacking him so swiftly would be admittance that the club got it wrong again. But then, reports have emerged suggesting the opposite.
Chelsea reportedly eyeing Luis Enrique as Liam Rosenior’s replacement
According to Indykaila News, an account with over 700,000 followers on X, there are serious concerns brewing within Chelsea regarding Rosenior. Sources indicate that some officials believe that he won’t be at the helm next season. One key figure based in the USA is reportedly eyeing Luis Enrique as a potential replacement.
Of course, there had always been doubts about Rosenior. He did not appear to have the resume required to take a job of this magnitude. And while the Englishman made a good start at Stamford Bridge, the team’s form has faded away quite quickly. The new manager bounce seems to be well and truly over.
Chelsea appointing Luis Enrique would represent a change of direction
For years now, fans have been calling for the club to rethink their model. Both in terms of signing players and appointing managers.
Graham Potter’s run was a complete failure. Mauricio Pochettino did a decent job steadying the ship but was then shown the exit door just when things were falling into place. Maresca exceeded expectations but was sacked, largely due to disagreements behind the scenes. And it is hard to see how Rosenior’s story at Stamford Bridge has a happy ending.
If the club do appoint Enrique, it would mark a change in their strategy. They would be bringing in a proven world-class manager. He is also someone who has shown he can get the best out of youngsters.
Enrique has won the Champions League with both Barcelona and PSG. Along the way, he has gotten the best out of mercurial talents like Neymar, Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and more.
In many ways, it would be the perfect fit at Stamford Bridge. Of course, it would also require a lot more ambition than Chelsea have shown in recent times.
