Chelsea made a bold decision when they sacked Enzo Maresca in the middle of the season and replaced him with Liam Rosenior. The Italian might not have always been a popular figure amongst the fans but he did win a couple of trophies in his first campaign, including the Club World Cup, while also securing Champions League qualification. That earned him his plaudits from the supporters.
So, they were not happy to see Maresca being replaced by someone as inexperienced as Rosenior. The only thing working in his favour seemed to be the fact that he was already under the BlueCo umbrella.
He had done reasonably well at Strasbourg. His spell at Hull City was positive as well. But overall, Rosenior was not a manager who seemed to have the resume to be the Chelsea manager.
At the moment, the doubters are being proven right. Chelsea have lost their last four games across all competitions. They have not even scored in their previous three outings. At the same time, they lost 8-2 on aggregate against PSG over two legs. And 3-0 against Everton. That just goes to show the depth of their troubles in both defence and attack under Rosenior.
Chelsea will sack Rosenior only on one condition
Unsurprisingly, the club’s horrible run of form has seen rise in speculation regarding the manager’s future. But as things stand, it does not look like Chelsea have any plans of parting ways with Rosenior, as things stand. That could change on only one condition.
According to The Telegraph, Rosenior’s position as Chelsea head coach is currently viewed as being secure even if the club miss out on qualifying for the Champions League. The club do not plan to review the manager’s performance formally before the summer of 2027. They have no intention of making a change at the end of this season.
The report adds that the only scenario in which that stance could change would be if Chelsea were to implode over the final weeks of the season.
Would it make sense to sack Rosenior right now?
We might be too late into the season for the club to sack Rosenior and have any real impact. So, giving him time to turn things around until the end of the campaign does make sense.
It is true that this is not a squad that was built in Rosenior’s presence. So, he might need a transfer window or two, to help tweak it to what he needs. Managers do need to given time and the right tools.
That being said, if it is clear by the end of the season that Rosenior is not the right man for the job, then it would be ideal to trust him with the summer transfer window as well. Chelsea have already signed far too many players who are not good enough for the club.
