Chelsea told to bring back former centre-back this summer

Defence has been a weakness for Chelsea this season. Levi Colwill got seriously injured in pre-season and has not played since then. Enzo Maresca had called for the club to sign a replacement to be signed. That request was overlooked. And in hindsight, it was a major error on the part of the Blues.

Chelsea have been poor defensively all season. That has been even more prominent in recent weeks. They conceded eight goals against PSG over two legs. That was followed by a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Everton to leave their Champions League qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

Chelsea badly need to sign a quality centre-back. Not another project signing that might or might not work out. They have gone that route far too often, and it has rarely paid off. The current squad is full of defenders who are not good enough.

Recently, the Blues were linked with a move for AC Milan centre-back Strahinja Pavlovic. Instead, they have now been backed to make a move for his teammate, who is incidentally a Cobham graduate.

Chelsea urged to bring back one of their former players to solve centre-back issue

According to talkSPORT, Matisse Armani said on the latest episode of Inside Chelsea:

“All of our centre backs feel like they’re the same, they’ve all got different weaknesses.

“Nobody’s at the level required. We basically need one of the best centre-backs in Europe. That’s what Chelsea need to move the needle.

“We don’t need someone that’s just good. We don’t need someone that’s got flaws and some errors in their game. We need someone that’s elite level. We need one of the best.”

On the other hand, host Joe Flemons said while speculating over names:

“Fikayo Tomori, I would have.”

Since joining AC Milan, Tomori has been able to establish himself as a starting centre-back for the club. But his contract there runs out in the summer of 2027. So, a window of opportunity might open up for Chelsea to make a move.

Would signing Tomori be the solution to Chelsea’s problems?

Tomori did get chances during his time at Chelsea. But ultimately, the club decided to move on. It would be safe to say that he has exceeded most expectations since joining AC Milan. Now 28 years old, he is in his prime. Could a return to the Premier League be on the cards for the England international?

AC Milan do have one of the best defences in the Serie A right now. So, as a consistent starter in the heart of the defence, Tomori deserves his fair share of credit.

Would signing Tomori solve all of Chelsea’s problems? That is hard to tell. That being said, he would certainly be an upgrade on the options that the Blues have available to them at this point in time. Let’s see if a move is indeed made.
