There has been plenty of talk about Enzo Fernandez potentially leaving Chelsea in the summer. For his part, the midfielder has not done anything to ensure that those rumours go away. And it is easy to understand why. The Blues will struggle to hold on to their best performers if they do not start winning consistently and competing for the big prizes again soon.

Chelsea have one of the most expensive squads in world football. But it feels like a lot of the investment has been made on players who do not have the desired quality and have failed to meet expectations. That is always the risk you run when going all in on potential, which is what BlueCo have done.

Fernandez was the first face of this BlueCo project, having been signed right after his World Cup win with Argentina. The Argentine’s leaving would not be ideal for Chelsea.

And if they cannot struggle like they have this season, it is only a matter of time before his midfield partner, Moises Caicedo starts being linked with an exit as well. In fact, the first of those whispers have already cropped up. Real Madrid are being suggested as a potential destination for the Ecuadorian international.

Moises Caicedo answers question about leaving Chelsea for Real Madrid

Caicedo is one of the best in the world in his role right now. Just like Fernandez, there is not going to be any lack of interest if he chooses to leave Chelsea.

Fortunately, it does not look like he has any plans to leave Chelsea at this moment. According to Fabrizio Romano, the midfielder told El Chiringuito TV when asked about Real Madrid looking for a midfielder: “I want to become a Chelsea legend.”

Caicedo further added: “I’m under contract at Chelsea and my focus is on CFC and Ecuador.”

Caicedo comments are a relief but must be rewarded

It is great to see that Caicedo sees a long-term future for himself at Chelsea. That is exactly what the fans will want to hear. That being said, he needs to be rewarded for that. The only way to do that would building a team that is able to compete at the highest level and against the very best in the world.

Completely focusing on signing players based on their potential might not be the right way to approach things. There needs to be the right mix between youth and experience for this to work. That has always been the case when it comes to football.

Chelsea’s overall recruitment might have been poor but they do have a few players who can be the building blocks of a successful team. Caicedo is one such player. Now, it is about surrounding them with others who have complementary qualities and trying to compete now rather than constantly look towards the future.
