Having come through the Cobham ranks, Josh Acheampong has always been considered someone who can become a Chelsea starter. He has been in and around the first-team for a while now, but opportunities have been hard to come by. Naturally, rumours have cropped up about a potential departure.
Reports have emerged suggesting that teams like Real Madrid and Liverpool are keeping an eye out on Acheampong. Of course, we have already seen Chelsea lose Lewis Hall. Could they now have to bid goodbye to a second quality youngster due to an inability to provide enough chances?
Rumours regarding clubs like Real Madrid and Liverpool are a worry for sure. That being said, it looks like Chelsea are clear about their stance on Acheampong.
According to Football Insider, Chelsea have no interest in sanctioning an exit for Acheampong in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Chelsea have made their decision on Acheampong amid exit rumours
Acheampong should be someone who goes on to become a key part of this Chelsea team. It is important for the club to continue to make use of their academy. There are quite a few who have left and proven themselves as quality players elsewhere.
So, Chelsea not being ready to let Acheampong leave is the right decision. But that cannot be the end of it. Now, it will be up to the club to show that they are serious about his development at the senior level.
Acheampong continues to be played at both right-back and centre-back. It is believed though that the youngster prefers the latter role. And considering Chelsea’s shortcomings in defence, what harm can it do to install him as a starter?
Chelsea’s transfer strategy makes it difficult for Cobham graduates
Chelsea’s transfer strategy since the BlueCo takeover has revolved around bringing in youngsters. The likes of Estevao, Geovany Quenda, Dastan Satpaev and several more have been signed.
Of course, that makes it difficult for Cobham graduates to break into the first-team and get consistent playing time. The priority mostly goes to those who have been brought in by spending significant transfer fees.
Opportunities have to be based on quality though. As things stand, it does not feel like Acheampong should be where he is currently on the pecking order. When given a chance, he has done a lot better than many of the players who have gotten a lot more playing time than him.
