Liam Rosenior made a good start as Chelsea manager. For a little while, it had looked like the club had found the answer to their problems by bringing in the likeable English coach. Of course, there was a touch of luck about the results, but ultimately, he was getting them. His comments to the media did bring a freshness as well, as the 41-year-old seemed a lot more relatable and open than most managers.

Since then, the results have turned. Chelsea have lost four on the trot and have not even scored in the last three games.

Those who have been following Chelsea for any decent length of time will know that a manager’s value at Stamford Bridge is always determined by results, at least in the eyes of the fans. Naturally, questions are being raised about Rosenior already.

On the other hand, Rosenior seems to be losing some of the early confidence he showed after arriving at Chelsea. And it seems like he is going back on some of his past comments as well.

Chelsea fans won’t be happy with Rosenior’s comments

Lately, there has been a lot of talk about Chelsea’s chances of making it to the Champions League qualifying spots. With every defeat, they seem to fall further behind rivals like Liverpool and Manchester United.

If you ask Rosenior, that is not even the priority for Chelsea at the moment though. According to ESPN UK, the manager said:

“Top four isn’t the priority right now. We’re focused on building long-term structure, identity, and consistency matter more than immediate results. We have no intention of finishing in the top four this season. The goal is to develop a team that want to compete, we want to improve, but the focus is on developing a team that can dominate for years, not just finish in the top four once or chase short-term positions. Chelsea demands success, but we’re not rushing the process. The project is clear, and we’re sticking to it.”

When was the last time the manager of a team like Chelsea came out and said that top four was not even a priority?

That is not something that Chelsea fans will be pleased to hear. They have been hearing about this ‘long-term success’ message for four years now. There has not been much to show for it, and very little to suggest that the plan will ever work out.

Rosenior seems to be making a U-turn already

There is an indication from Rosenior’s comments that the results right now are not as important as the focus is on the long-term future. But when he had first arrived at Stamford Bridge, the manager had appeared to have a different view of the task.

According to Reuters back in January, Rosenior had said:

“I’d love to be here six years or longer. But to do that, you need to start winning. So my focus is that I have ideas of how the team should look like in one or two years.

“But I already have resources here to win.”

Well, Rosenior

Well, Rosenior is not winning enough at the moment. And he needs to start doing that. He might feel that he has the backing of the club management but that was the case with Graham Potter as well. We all know how that story ended. And this will too, if results don’t improve quickly.
