This upcoming summer transfer window is going to be a very important one for Chelsea. It will tell a lot about where the BlueCo ownership stands. Four seasons since the takeover, the Blues have not been able to achieve much of note, at least by the club’s standards.
When it comes to retaining top players, that was always going to be a problem. Enzo Fernandez is someone who is now being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in the summer.
Reports emerged in Argentina that there were chances that Fernandez could leave this summer. And when asked about it after the second leg against PSG, he did not rule it out either.
That sent alarm bells ringing amongst the Chelsea fans. In the aftermath, Liam Rosenior did suggest that Fernandez’s comments had been misconstrued. But that did not do much to ease fears that an exit was being engineered behind the scenes.
Roy Keane tells Chelsea to part ways with Enzo Fernandez
Chelsea find themselves in a difficult spot. Fernandez does have a long-term contract with the club. But that does not mean much in modern football if a player does not want to stay.
There are some who would suggest the club to part ways with Fernandez. According to The Chelsea Chronicle, Keane said on Stick To Football:
“He’s a good player, but come the summer if you’re not happy with all that stuff, then you can go. That’s what you do with him. They’ve signed these deals, I’ve no sympathy for them.”
That is the kind of straightforward answer that you would expect from Keane. Now, it remains to be seen how Chelsea will handle this situation. Letting Fernandez go would not be easy decision.
Chelsea’s problems are starting to mount
Chelsea might have handed long-term deals to their players, but it won’t be easy to keep them happy if they continue to struggle. Fernandez is a World Cup winner at both club and international levels. He will want to be in a team capable of competing against the very best. Unfortunately, the Blues are not capable of doing that at the moment.
Fernandez was signed by Chelsea from Benfica for a transfer fee in the region of €121 million. He was the first real major signing of the new ownership. So, if he leaves the club now, it would not be a good look, as BlueCo are still trying to push this ‘project’ as being one set to create one of the most dominant teams in Europe.
And Fernandez might not be the only one eyeing the exit door. How long before the likes of Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and a few others start considering their futures as well due to Chelsea’s inability to compete at the highest level?
