Strengthening the defence has to be a priority for Chelsea in the summer transfer window. In fact, it should have been done in the previous one. But the club chose to trust the options they already had rather than finding a replacement for Levi Colwill after the centre-back suffered an ACL injury in pre-season. It was the wrong decision, and they paid the price for it.
Chelsea’s defence has been suspect throughout the season. They have shipped goals on a consistent basis. The issue has become even more apparent in recent weeks.
Chelsea conceded eight goals over their two legs against PSG in the Champions League. Against Everton, they lost 3-0.
Chelsea need to add a quality, proven centre-back at the moment. But the Blues continue to be linked with youngsters. The latest of them is on the books of Tottenham Hotspur.
Tottenham Hotspur centre-back on the radar of Chelsea
According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea have an interest in Tottenham Hotspur’s Luka Vuskovic ahead of the summer transfer window. A source have told the outlet:
“It’s true that Chelsea are interested. They’ve done their homework on him and he’s high up on their list as they look for a new centre-back.”
Vuskovic has not featured for Tottenham Hotspur since being signed from Hajduk Split. But he has been immensely impressive while away on loan at Hamburg SV in the Bundesliga this season.
Vuskovic has managed to establish himself as a nailed-on starter for Hamburg SV. They have the best defensive record in the Bundesliga outside of the top six. That has seen him become a full Croatian international as well.
Would Vuskovic be the solution for Chelsea’s problems?
Vuskovic is exactly the type of signing that Chelsea have been making under BlueCo for the past four seasons. There is no doubt that he is a highly-rated talent and could develop into a top player.
However, that is not the need of the hour at Chelsea right now. What they need is a quality centre-back who will immediately come into the starting XI and raise the bar defensively.
Fans would like to see Chelsea go out and sign one of the top centre-backs in world football. But considering everything we have seen during the BlueCo era, that is not very likely. That being said, signing Vuskovic would not be simple for the Blues, as it will take a lot to convince Tottenham Hotspur to allow one of their most highly-rated talents to head to Stamford Bridge. It remains to be seen if the Blues will make a serious push for him or not.
