For the past week or so, it had looked like BlueCo were willing to change their model. Or at least, tweak it. There had been suggestions that the Blues would look for Premier League-proven and experienced players in the summer. Of course, that is what the Chelsea fans have been calling for for some time.
BlueCo have put together one of the most expensive squads in football history. But the team cannot even qualify for the Champions League consistently, forget about competing for it. That shows a lot of things have gone wrong over the past four seasons.
One of them has to be the overreliance on youngsters. During the BlueCo era, the club have overlooked the need for proven quality and experience. Instead, they have focused on signing wonderkids from all around the globe.
They need to move away from this strategy. And it looked like they were ready to do this summer. Unfortunately, there are now fresh doubts about that. It looks like there might have been a misunderstanding when it comes to Chelsea’s transfer plans for the summer.
David Ornstein drops worrying update on Chelsea’s summer transfer plans
David Ornstein is arguably the most reliable voice in football today. And the journalist has come out with an update on Chelsea’s transfer plans that might leave the fans worried once again.
As reported by The Chelsea Chronicle, Ornstein said on NBC Sports:
“Chelsea have plans to improve their squad this summer, they’re looking for greater emotional resilience and maturity, players who are ready to start and have an impact straight away.
“This ISN’T necessarily saying older or more experienced, or players who are used to playing in the Premier League, it’s just players who hit the above criteria.”
So, it looks like Chelsea might still look to sign youngsters. They will just be hoping that they are ready to come in and start immediately. And who will determine that? Who decides whether a player meets the ‘criteria’ or not? Well, the same people who have put together this current squad. It is not hard to understand why fans might not be entirely convinced by the idea and how well it will work.
Chelsea need experience but continue to run away from it
Football has some intangibles. You rarely win without them in place. At this moment, Chelsea do not have an experienced leader in this squad. A proven winner who can guide this young crop of players. Tosin Adarabioyo cannot be the one to play that role.
Even clubs like PSG, you have a young squad themselves and have been very successful with it, have veterans like Marquinhos and Fabian Ruiz. They have someone like Luis Enrique in the dugout.
Chelsea have none of that. What they do seem to have is a desire to change football. But unfortunately, there might be some things you can never change about this game. The need for experience in a squad is one of them. Even Manchester United’s Class of 92 had veterans to guide them to success.
