Chelsea eyeing two former players as their next manager

Who will be the next permanent manager of Chelsea? The club have sacked Liam Rosenior after just three months in the job. Calum McFarlane will replace him as interim boss until the end of the season. But the next long-term appointment could be make or break for this BlueCo era.

Fans are already frustrated with how things have been run. They also look set to miss out on Champions League football next season, which is the last thing they needed after posting losses north of £260 million for the 24/25 campaign.

So, the last thing that Chelsea can afford right now is another bad managerial appointment. They need someone who is ready to come in and turn things around for the club. The kind of job that Jurgen Klopp did at Liverpool, or Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, to some extent.

The problem is, not many elite managers would consider the Chelsea job at this point in time. The club are no longer serial winners with a penchant for signing top talent. That identity has vanished under BlueCo. On top of that, it is believed that the ownership does not really want their head coach to have a ton of say when it comes to transfer matters. If accurate, that makes the post even less attractive.

Two former Chelsea players reportedly on BlueCo’s radar

One of the moves that BlueCo could make, which would lift the mood of the supporters, is bringing back a popular face from the past. And it looks there are two on their radar.

According to Football Insider, Chelsea will consider appointing both Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis as manager. The club view an ex-player as the best option to replace Rosenior.

Both Fabregas and Luis were part of Jose Mourinho’s Premier League-winning squad from the 2014/15 season. Could a return to Stamford Bridge be on the cards for either?

Fabregas or Luis, who would be better?

There is a lot to like about both managers. Fabregas is currently at Como and has exceeded all expectations there while working with a young squad. He might be a good fit for this current Chelsea roster and would command the respect of the players from the get-go, thanks to his legendary status in the game.

On the other hand, Luis’ record at Flamengo was world-class as he won four trophies in one season. He also has the Copa Libertadores in his cabinet.

Both were proven winners during their playing days as well. But that being said, it has to be pointed out that neither is the most experienced in terms of management. And, appointing either would come with its fair share of risk.
