Chelsea have constantly looked to sign youngsters from all over the world since the BlueCo takeover. Going into the summer, ‘Premier League-proven’ seems to be the buzzword when it comes to recruitment though. Consequently, the Blues might be looking closer to home for their wonderkid signings.
Lucas Bergvall of Tottenham Hotspur is believed to be someone who has caught their interest. Aston Villa are another club said to have an eye on the youngster’s situation.
Both clubs might be seeing this as a good opportunity. That is because Tottenham Hotspur are in the relegation zone and could find themselves in the Championship come next season. If that does happen, one would imagine a good portion of their current squad will look to leave.
That could open up the window of opportunity for Chelsea to make their move. So, what is Bergvall’s stance on leaving Tottenham for the club’s London rivals, or Aston Villa?
Lucas Bergvall makes decision on Tottenham exit amid relegation fears
According to Football Insider, Bergvall has “no plans” to leave Tottenham Hotspur for Chelsea or Aston Villa if they are able to avoid a relegation from the Premier League.
Of course, that is a big ‘if’. As things stand, Nottingham Forest have been successful in opening up a bit of a gap. So, they might have done enough to be safe, realistically.
That leaves Tottenham Hotspur looking towards West Ham United. It is very likely that one of these two London clubs will go down at the end of the season. If it turns out to be the former, would it change Bergvall’s mind on an exit?
Last thing Chelsea need right now is more youngsters
For years, Chelsea fans have been calling out for the club to add some experience and proven quality to the squad. And lately, the suggestions have been that BlueCo are willing to tweak their policy.
Of course, most would feel that a lot more than ‘tweaking’ needs to be done in order to fix things at Chelsea. But even that would be a good start for the time being.
If the club do go after ‘Premier League-proven’ players, let’s hope that they are some of the best in England, not just players who have played a bit of football in the top flight and are somewhere in the middle of the pecking order at their current teams. That won’t help matters at all.
