Chelsea are witnessing the unfolding of yet another poor season. The FA Cup is the only piece of silverware they have a chance of winning. Apart from that, even Champions League qualification seems too far out of reach at the moment.
The young Chelsea side has faced a number of problems that have resulted in the current situation. So, the club will go into the market in the upcoming summer transfer window looking to reinforce a number of areas. At least they should. Just bringing in a new manager won’t be enough.
The striker role is one such position that is likely to see some changes. In fact, Chelsea have been linked with Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez for quite some time.
The former Manchester City star has established himself as one of the best in his position. Chelsea and Barcelona are both reported to be interested in securing Alvarez’s services. That said, it looks like the Blues have a slight edge over Barca.
Chelsea are willing to meet transfer demands to sign Julian Alvarez
According to TEAMtalk, Atletico Madrid’s initial demands are around €120 million minimum to part ways with Alvarez. That is seemingly beyond Barcelona’s summer budget.
The report further states that Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG are all ready to offer straight cash. Also, Atletico would clearly prefer to transfer him outside of Spain than allow Alvarez to join a rival.
Alvarez left City not too long ago, in 2024, for a fee of around €75 million to join Atletico Madrid. Since then, he has scored 49 goals for the Spanish club and provided 17 assists in 105 appearances.
Notably, the 26-year-old is the third top scorer in the Champions League this season, with his team still holding a chance of going all the way in the competition. They drew 1-1 with Arsenal in the first leg of the semi-final, with Alvarez scoring. In the process, he became the quickest Argentine to score 25 goals in the competition, ahead of a certain Lionel Messi!
Julian Alvarez will be a great signing for Chelsea
Chelsea could use someone like Alvarez to lead their front line. The youth-only experiment has clearly failed. On the plus side, the club seem to be looking in the right direction if links with the Argentine World Cup winner are true.
Chelsea brought in two forwards last summer in the form of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro. But only the latter has managed to live up to expectations.
Alvarez brings with him a lot of experience on the biggest stages. Moreover, he is already familiar with Premier League football as well.
All things considered, it won’t be easy for Chelsea to sign Alvarez, that’s certain. But they would receive a major boost if they can manage to make that happen and bring the Argentine back to England.
