One of the names a lot of Chelsea fans would like to see get the managerial post this summer is Cesc Fabregas. Of course, he already has a history with the club. He won two Premier League titles with the Blues as a player. And right now, he is doing a tremendous job as the manager of Como FC, as they sit at fifth in the Serie A table and are in contention to qualify for the Champions League.
When it comes to experience, Fabregas does not have a ton of it. But he has already shown that he is capable of delivering results and playing a good brand of football, even with underdogs. Como have scored the second-most goals in Serie A this season while conceding the second-least.
That being said, the Chelsea job is one that many rising managers might be wary of. Just look at how things turned out for Liam Rosenior, who was highly regarded at Strasbourg himself. A high-profile failure at Stamford Bridge can derail one’s career, or at the very least, slow it down.
When it comes to Fabregas, it does not look like a move to Chelsea might be in the plans. On the contrary, he might have an eye on Arsenal.
Sky Sports journalist throws doubt over Fabregas to Chelsea move
As quoted on X, Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol said about the Fabregas to Chelsea situation:
“Cesc Fabregas, what I’ve been told, there’s some kind of suggestion that long-term, the plan for him is to manage Arsenal one day. I’m not sure moving to Chelsea would be part of his career progression.”
Mikel Arteta has been at Arsenal since 2019. As far as managerial stints in modern football go, that is a long time. It is very possible that he might seek a change of scenery in the future.
That could open up the door for someone like Fabregas to make a return to Arsenal. Of course, it was there that he got his big break in football. He spent eight years playing for the club and even became captain before eventually leaving for FC Barcelona. So, it is not hard to see why he might be interested in a reunion.
Who could be the next manager of Chelsea?
When it comes to Fabregas, it feels like the timeline simply does not match. It might be a bit too early for him right now not to get the Chelsea job. But a few years down the line, he might be more interested in Arsenal.
Let’s see how it all plays out. But as things stand, it looks like it is unlikely that Fabregas will join Chelsea this summer as the club’s new manager.
Of course, never say never in football. During his playing days, nobody would have expected Fabregas to play for Chelsea one day, when he was captaining Arsenal. Yet, he did. And quite successfully.
