It would be safe to say that Chelsea need to drastically strengthen their squad this summer. The defeat against Nottingham Forest’s second-string side at home was their sixth in a row in the Premier League. It is their worst run of form since 1993. And things are not expected to get any better, with most of the players looking like they are going through the motions and waiting for this season to be over.
Marc Cucurella might fall under that category. Considered the best left-back in the Premier League not too long ago, he was keeping Lamine Yamal quiet earlier this very season. But now, he seems to be struggling against relegation-contending teams.
On top of that, Cucurella has openly spoken out against Chelsea’s transfer model recently as well. So, one has to wonder whether he is already checked out and is eyeing the exit door this summer.
If he is, Chelsea might need to sign a replacement, and a quality one at that. Interestingly, it looks like a Uruguayan international is on their radar.
Chelsea and Manchester United interested in Maximiliano Araujo
According to CaughtOffside, Manchester United and Chelsea are showing interest in signing Maximiliano Araujo this summer. It is said that the Blues view the Uruguayan international as a flexible addition who could compete with, or provide cover for, existing options on the left side.
There is believed to be a €80 million release clause in his contract. Obviously, Chelsea are not going to pay that for a left-back who might or might not be a starter.
That being said, reports have suggesed that Sporting CP could be willing to accept offers in the region of €40-50 million. That would be a much more realistic number.
Maximiliano Araujo move could hint at Xabi Alonso appointment
It remains to be seen what that future holds for Cucurella. In many ways, that would determine Chelsea’s view on this left-back spot.
Also, let’s not overlook Jorrel Hato’s impressive performances in recent weeks. He has been one of the standouts over the last few months and it might be time to start considering starting him over Cucurella. Since Calum McFarlane has taken the reins, he has been an unused substitute in both games.
Also, could there be a Xabi Alonso angle behind a move for Araujo? The Spaniard did play with wing-backs during his time as Bayer Leverkusen boss, where he won a Bundesliga and DFB Pokal. The Uruguayan is very adept at playing that role.
