Chelsea need to strengthen all across the pitch in this upcoming summer transfer window. Their defence has been a major problem for them. But with Levi Colwill returning, there are some hopes that they will look more defensively solid in the last few weeks of the campaign. Despite that, I would like to see multiple additions being made to the backline.
On the other hand, their attack has not been much better either. Just look at the lack of goals over this poor run. Fortunately, they have scored in the past three games under Calum McFarlane. But even then, the Blues have not managed more than one in a goal.
A top team needs to be scoring a lot more frequently. And so, it would only make sense for Chelsea to try and add another striker to their ranks. Joao Pedro has been a standout performer this season. But other than him, the Blues do not have a consistent goalscorer. Both Liam Delap and Marc Guiu have struggled.
Chelsea eyeing move for former Liverpool striker
A lot might end up depending on Nicolas Jackson’s future as he is set to return from his loan spell at Bayern Munich. Of course, Emmanuel Emegha will be joining this summer as well, as a deal has already been agreed for the Strasbourg captain.
But that has not stopped Chelsea from being linked with other strikers. One of them is a former Liverpool player, who could be available as a free agent.
According to Football Insider, Darwin Nunez has fallen out of favour with Al-Hilal. Chelsea, Newcastle United and Juventus are all plotting moves to try to sign him ahead of next season. The Uruguayan could potentially have his deal terminated by the club.
Darwin Nunez’s time at Liverpool was better than most people think
Nunez faced a lot of criticism during his time playing for Liverpool. But his goalscoring record for the Reds was not exactly bad.
Nunez scored 40 goals and provided 26 assists in 7430 minutes of football. That is not a bad output for a striker who was so heavily criticised. Also, 41 of his goal contributions came in the Premier League in 4861 minutes of football. So, it is not like he was padding his numbers in cup competitions.
Now, I am not saying that someone like Nunez would come in and make Chelsea contenders on his own. But when it comes to backup options and free agent signings, the Blues could do a lot worse than a 26-year-old Uruguayan international who scored 15 or more goals in two of his three seasons in England.
Now, that does not mean that he does not have his weaknesses. He has plenty. For example, he underperformed his xG in all three of his seasons in the Premier League. So, he is not an efficient finisher by any means. And if that is what Chelsea are looking for, Nunez would not be the striker to go for.
