This summer transfer window is going to be a busy one for Chelsea. Xabi Alonso is set to arrive as manager and will hopefully be handed a squad capable of delivering the results that the fans are hoping for and competing with the likes of Arsenal. In order to ensure that, the Blues might need to part ways with some players first, in order to fund the rebuild.
One of the positions that could be set to undergo some changes is goalkeeper. Robert Sanchez remains the number one but it has been suggested that Mike Penders will compete with him from next season.
That would be bad news for the current crop of goalkeepers. Filip Jorgensen looks almost certain to leave. But he is not the only one who could be on his way out this summer.
According to BBC Sport, Gabriel Slonina is looking to leave this summer. The United States international goalkeeper has been made available for a move.
Gabriel Slonina has failed to live up to expectations at Chelsea
Clubs across Europe are believed to have expressed an interest in signing Slonina. Now, it remains to be seen any of them end up making a suitable offer.
Slonina was one of the first signings Chelsea had made under BlueCo ownership. The American international was brought in for a transfer fee around $10 million.
Since then, he has not made a single appearance for Chelsea. Instead, he has spent his time away on loan or warming the bench as the third-choice option in goal behind Sanchez and Jorgensen.
Now 22 years of age, it is easy to understand why Slonina might be keen on a move away. And it looks like the club are ready to grant him his wish, with Penders set to come in.
Slonina might not be the only youngster to leave this summer
Since the change of ownership, Chelsea have signed a number of youngsters. But not many of them have been able to meet the expectations which were set for them.
Sooner or later, the club need to make a decision on these youngsters. And Slonina might not be the only one they are now ready to part ways with, seeing his Chelsea career is headed nowhere.
When was the last time you even heard of Deivid Washington or David Datro Fofana? It most certainly has been a while. And it is hard to imagine that the club will come even close to recouping those transfer fees.
In many ways, this summer has to be a fresh start for the club. Not just on the pitch but the entire way this operation is being run.
