Chelsea Secure Academy Star Mahdi Nicoll Jazuli On Scholarship

Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli has given Chelsea a timely academy retention win after committing his future to the club on scholarship terms.

Football London reports that Nicoll-Jazuli and Reggie Watson have signed scholarship terms with Chelsea despite interest from European clubs. The report adds that both players are expected to sign professional contracts when they turn 17 in January 2027.

David Ornstein also reported the Nicoll-Jazuli agreement, describing the 16-year-old as a top Chelsea prospect and confirming the plan for him to move onto a professional deal when eligible.

For Chelsea, the timing matters. Cobham has already seen elite young talent leave before the club could fully control the pathway, with Rio Ngumoha’s move to Liverpool still the obvious warning around academy retention.

Nicoll-Jazuli’s profile explains why Chelsea wanted this secured early. Transfermarkt lists him as a central midfielder for Chelsea Under-18s and England Under-17s, while Football Transfers reports that he made 35 youth-team appearances last season, scoring twice and adding six assists.

ReadChelsea has already covered how recent academy movement has sharpened the pathway question under Xabi Alonso. Keeping Nicoll-Jazuli inside the structure gives Chelsea another high-ceiling asset to develop on their own terms.

The first-team route still has to be earned. Chelsea’s midfield depth remains significant, and young players need more than reputation to move through Cobham into senior football.

This agreement still gives the club control.

Nicoll-Jazuli now has scholarship security, a professional-contract pathway and time to keep building across youth and development football. For Chelsea, that is the right kind of academy business after several reminders of how quickly elite prospects can be pulled away.
