Chelsea have reportedly tested Manchester City’s stance on Ruben Dias and received a firm answer.
TEAMtalk reports that Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona have all explored whether the Portugal centre-back could leave the Etihad Stadium this summer.
City have rejected that interest and made it clear that Dias is not for sale.
The stance is no surprise. Manchester City confirmed in August 2025 that Dias had signed a new four-year contract, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2029.
Reuters also reported that the deal extended his stay after a period in which he had become one of City’s senior defensive leaders.
Alonso Still Needs A Centre-Back Plan
For Chelsea, the significance is not only the failed enquiry. It also shows the type of defender Xabi Alonso’s recruitment team appear to want.
Dias would have offered leadership, Champions League experience and Premier League authority. He would also have brought the senior presence Chelsea have been looking for while Alonso reshapes the back line.
Read Chelsea has already covered the club’s interest in Maxence Lacroix, another centre-back linked with Chelsea during the summer window. Dias sits at the elite end of that market, but City’s contract control makes a deal extremely unlikely.
Chelsea can still take something from the enquiry. It confirms the profile they are assessing: a dominant senior defender who can organise the line and raise the standard quickly.
The harder part is finding a realistic route. Dias looks blocked, so Chelsea’s next move needs to be sharper and more attainable.
