Enzo Fernandez Late Winner Rescues Argentina Against Egypt

Enzo Fernandez scored a 92nd-minute winner as Argentina came from 2-0 down to beat Egypt 3-2 and reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

The Chelsea midfielder decided the last-16 tie in Atlanta with a late header. Lautaro Martinez crossed from the left, Fernandez escaped Yasser Ibrahim and guided his finish into the corner.

It was a major Argentina moment. It was also another reminder for Chelsea.

Fernandez is often discussed through the lens of control, workload and transfer noise. This was different. His biggest contribution came from timing a run into the box when Argentina needed someone to attack the space.

Egypt had threatened a major shock. Ibrahim headed them in front after 15 minutes from Marwan Attia’s cross, before Lionel Messi missed a first-half penalty.

Mostafa Ziko later had a goal ruled out by VAR, but Egypt did not fade. He scored in the 67th minute and left Argentina facing a damaging World Cup exit.

Fernandez Turns Control Into End Product

Argentina looked short of rhythm for long spells. Then Messi crossed for Cristian Romero to head in with 11 minutes left.

The equaliser followed quickly. Gonzalo Montiel found Messi inside the area, and the Argentina captain drove his shot in off the crossbar.

Fernandez then supplied the decisive moment. His header kept Argentina’s title defence alive and pushed them into a quarter-final against Switzerland or Colombia.

For Chelsea, the goal fits a wider pattern. Fernandez does not only give a team passing range from midfield. He can also arrive late, attack the penalty area and change matches.

That is the part Xabi Alonso cannot ignore.

ReadChelsea covered this week how Alonso must use pre-season to judge his attacking options before the squad picture settles. Fernandez’s World Cup winner adds another layer to that discussion because Chelsea need goals from midfield, not just from their forwards.

Alonso Has A Better Enzo Question

The easy Chelsea angle would be fatigue. Fernandez has carried heavy Argentina minutes again, and his tournament could still run deeper.

There is another point here. Chelsea have spent much of the summer discussing what Fernandez is worth, whether Real Madrid noise goes anywhere and how Alonso builds around him.

A stoppage-time World Cup winner cuts through that debate. Fernandez remains one of Chelsea’s few midfielders who can control a game and still threaten the box.

That combination is valuable in a side that often needs more runners around Cole Palmer. It also gives Alonso a clear tactical route if he wants Chelsea to become less predictable in settled attacks.

ReadChelsea has also looked at the decision Chelsea face around Andrey Santos after Manchester United interest emerged. Fernandez’s latest Argentina moment shows why the senior midfield structure needs clarity before Chelsea make any major call.

The workload concern still exists. Chelsea will want Fernandez back fit, fresh and ready for Alonso’s first season.

His winner against Egypt showed the other side of the argument. Some players do not just survive big moments. They decide them.
