Niamh Charles has left Chelsea to join Women’s Super League rivals Manchester City in a deal worth £500,000.
The England international has signed a three-year contract with City after six years at Chelsea, where she made 173 appearances and won 12 major domestic trophies.
BBC Sport reported the fee at £500,000, with Charles moving after a trophy-heavy spell at the Stamford Bridge club. Manchester City confirmed the deal on Friday, adding another experienced England international to the WSL champions’ squad. Reuters also reported the move as City continue to strengthen after winning their first league title in a decade.
Chelsea have already moved on the left side this summer. ReadChelsea covered how Katie McCabe’s arrival gives Sonia Bompastor a ruthless left-side upgrade, and Charles’ exit now gives that signing an even clearer role.
Chelsea Lose Experience But Refresh Left Side
Charles leaves with a major Chelsea record behind her. She won five WSL titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups, while also helping the club reach the 2021 Women’s Champions League final.
Her move also fits City’s wider plan. The champions have already added Beth Mead from Arsenal, while Khadija Shaw’s new contract gave them another major lift.
For Chelsea, the timing is important. Charles’ departure follows McCabe’s arrival from Arsenal, giving Bompastor a different left-sided profile with more edge, set-piece quality and leadership.
ReadChelsea has also covered how Lucy Bronze’s contract extension protects experience in Chelsea’s defensive group, which softens some of the loss created by Charles’ move.
Chelsea still lose a proven WSL defender and an England international to a direct rival. That cannot be ignored.
But this is not a gap left without planning. McCabe’s arrival, Bronze’s extension and the wider squad reset suggest Chelsea have already started reshaping before the new Stamford Bridge era.
Charles now gets the regular minutes she wants before next year’s World Cup. Chelsea get a significant fee and a left side built around a new voice.
