Enzo Fernández has removed the Oasis song “Wonderwall” from an Instagram story after appearing to mock England following Argentina’s World Cup semi-final victory.
The Chelsea midfielder scored Argentina’s 85th-minute equaliser before Lautaro Martínez completed a dramatic 2-1 comeback in Atlanta.
Fernández later reshared an image of himself laughing alongside Lionel Messi and Leandro Paredes. The original version included “Wonderwall”, which England players and supporters had adopted during their run through the tournament.
The 25-year-old then posted the same image again without the song after receiving criticism online.
According to the Evening Standard report carried by AOL, Fernández’s change followed further controversy involving Chelsea’s own social media activity.
Chelsea also removed Fernández post
Chelsea had congratulated Fernández on reaching a second consecutive World Cup final through their official X account.
The club later deleted the post after supporters criticised an English team for celebrating a goal which helped eliminate England.
As Read Chelsea reported after the semi-final, the reaction placed the club in a difficult position because Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah were part of Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
Fernández’s goal provided one of the decisive moments of the match. His celebration, which included cupping his ears, had already attracted attention before the Instagram story appeared.
There is no evidence Chelsea asked him to alter the post. The midfielder appears to have made the change himself after the reaction online.
Fernández will now prepare for Sunday’s final against Spain. He is expected to start as Argentina attempt to become the first country since Brazil in 1962 to retain the World Cup.
The midfielder will then return to Chelsea, where Xabi Alonso has publicly confirmed he wants him to remain next season.
