Chelsea officially announce permanent exit for record-breaking winger

Chelsea winger Chris Atherton has completed a permanent move to Ipswich Town after one season at Cobham.

The 17-year-old will initially link up with Ipswich’s under-18 squad, although he is also expected to receive opportunities with the under-21s.

Atherton joined Chelsea from Glenavon last summer and signed his first professional contract in October 2025.

He featured regularly for Chelsea’s under-18s and also appeared in the Under-17 Premier League Cup, scoring for both sides.

Chelsea’s official announcement confirmed Atherton’s permanent departure, with the club thanking the winger for his contribution during his short spell at Cobham.

Atherton continues remarkable development story

Atherton had already made football history before arriving at Chelsea.

He became the youngest player to make a senior appearance in United Kingdom football when he debuted for Glenavon at 13 years and 329 days old.

The winger went on to make 32 senior appearances for the Northern Irish club before moving to London.

Atherton described himself as a creative attacker who wants to provide a threat in the final third while continuing to improve at Ipswich.

Academy manager Ben Chenery said the club believe the teenager possesses significant potential and can continue his development within their youth structure.

The move continues a busy summer of academy decisions at Chelsea.

As Read Chelsea’s transfer tracker outlines, several young players have left permanently as the club reshapes pathways across the academy and first team.

Atherton’s departure is not believed to include an immediate route into Ipswich’s senior squad. However, his previous first-team experience and regular football at Chelsea should place him in contention to progress quickly.

Chelsea lose a promising winger after only one campaign, while Ipswich gain a player with an unusual amount of senior and academy experience for his age.
