Chelsea have officially announced the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a club-record £117million.
The England international has signed a seven-year contract which will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2033. Rogers becomes Xabi Alonso’s fourth summer addition after Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda.
In their official announcement, Chelsea confirmed the arrival of one of the Premier League’s leading young attackers.
“For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid,” Rogers said.
“I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading.”
Xabi Alonso convinced Rogers to join Chelsea
Arsenal had also held talks over signing Rogers and initially appeared well placed to complete a deal. However, Chelsea moved quickly after identifying him as one of Alonso’s priority targets.
The 23-year-old later confirmed that Alonso’s ideas played a major part in his decision. The pair held several conversations about Chelsea’s playing style and the freedom Rogers would receive within the new system.
ReadChelsea previously examined how Alonso could use Rogers alongside Cole Palmer. The England forward is expected to begin from the left, allowing Palmer to retain his preferred central role.
Rogers contributed 40 Premier League goals and assists during his Villa career. He also helped Unai Emery’s side finish in the top four and win the Europa League last season.
Chelsea have now completed one of the most significant transfers of the BlueCo era. Alonso convinced an established England international to reject Arsenal and join his rebuild at Stamford Bridge.
