Chelsea have snapped up a young, talented duo from Cambridge United, the League Two side have confirmed.
The club released a statement via their official club website, confirming that U15s player Marcel Lewis and U14s player, Dion Rankine have left to join the Blues’ infamous academy teams.
The Premier League side have agreed to pay a compensation for the two players, who have both been with the club since U9s level.
Cambridge’s Academy manager, Mark Bonner revealed that Chelsea fought off competition from other big teams to secure the services of the two youngsters.
It reflects the quality within our Academy that a top club such as Chelsea are willing to pay this level of compensation for two of our players. As we continue to become stronger every year, situations of this kind will happen from time to time when the strength of the interest is as strong as it has been from a number of clubs.
Despite not yet making a senior appearance for the League Two outfit, the Blues have held a long-standing interest in both players, who spent time at Chelsea’s training facilities over the summer.
Chelsea have enjoyed a very successful recent history with the academy, enjoying success domestically and in European competitions, and our always on the hunt for the best young talent in England.
