There has not been much positivity around Chelsea over the past week. The performance against Wrexham was a warning sign. And although the Blues were not terrible against PSG, they still los 5-2. That is all that matters. It is hard to imagine that this team will be able to overturn a three-goal deficit in the second leg. So, that tie is as good as over for Liam Rosenior’s side.
It is quite clear that some of these players are not good enough for Chelsea. The squad needs an injection of experience and quality in the summer if they want to be competing with the best.
At the same time though, it is important that they keep their best players around. There has been growing speculation around the likes of Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez.
Fortunately, it looks like the Blues have found an agreement over a long-term deal with one of their most important players.
David Ornstein confirms great news for Chelsea
Reece James was one of Chelsea’s better performers against PSG. More importantly, the Chelsea captain has remained mostly fit for more than a year now. That will come as a relief to the supporters. For a while, it had looked like his career was going to get cut short by constant injuries.
According to David Ornstein, James has committed his future to Chelsea by signing a new six-year contract. His previous deal was until 2028, but the fresh agreement runs until June 2032. It aligns the England right-back with the club’s incentivised wage structure.
James signs long-term contract with Chelsea
It would be safe to say that James is the one the fans feel the most connection with. He came through the Cobham youth system and has gone on to become the club captain.
He is also someone who has survived the change of ownership and remained at Stamford Bridge. Thus, in many ways, it feels like a connection to the past as well.
Of course, the most important thing was James getting back to fitness, which he seems to have done. He is constantly under load management. And the strategy has worked to be fair.
Handing James a long-term extension is a very good decision on the part of Chelsea. This summer, he was only going to have a couple of years left on his deal and there was bound to be speculation around his future. Now, the Blues have one less thing to worry about.
