Chelsea owners will refuse to make one change this summer

Four seasons into the BlueCo ownership, it is safe to say that their project has failed to meet expectations. Initially, it had been suggested that they would need four transfer windows to put together one of the best teams in European football. Twice that time has passed, and there are no signs that the Blues are anywhere close.

BlueCo showed courage by investing in youngsters. But they made the mistake of completely overlooking the need for experience. Some veterans are needed in the squad to guide these rising talents. Even Manchester United’s Class of 92 were surrounded by proven professionals.

There have been some suggestions that Chelsea might be willing to tweak their transfer policy in the summer window and bring in some Premier League-proven players.

That would be the right decision. But on the other hand, it looks like the Chelsea owners are unwilling to budge on one thing.

Chelsea owners reportedly unwilling to change wage structure

According to The Chelsea Chronicle, Simon Phillips has shared on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital will not adapt the club’s incentive-based wage structure this summer.

Of course, that wage structure could lead to plenty of problems for Chelsea in the future. In fact, the first of those might already be on the horizon. Enzo Fernandez’s issues are believed to be based on the inability to agree on an improved deal.

The club’s other top players will start looking for better deals sooner or later as well. As a result, Chelsea might have a tough time keeping hold of the few who have done well since arriving.

Chelsea will struggle to compete for top players in the summer transfer window

Of course, that kind of wage structure will make it difficult for the club to compete for top players on the move. Let’s imagine Vinicius Jr leaves Real Madrid in the future. Chelsea would not even be in the mix as they would not willing to match the contract that some other teams would offer the Brazilian.

That will be true for plenty of others as well. So, Chelsea will never really be a viable destination for the world’s best players. They might bring in some experience for sure, but they won’t be at the level of world-class talents.

So, there is a lot to be worried about if you are a Chelsea fan, despite recent talks of tweaks to the transfer policy. Let’s see how things look for the Blues in the summer.
